Blue Indonesian Amber is a unique variety of natural amber that differs significantly from traditional Baltic varieties. It typically exhibits a translucent dark brown color, often featuring beautiful swirls or layers. Visually, the material resembles various shades of translucent honey, ranging from light to dark tones. These warm, golden earth tones are most vibrant when viewed in sunlight or other bright light sources. A defining characteristic of this material is its remarkable fluorescence. Under ultraviolet (UV) light, the amber glows with a distinct bluish or periwinkle color. The highest quality pieces may even display this effect in natural sunlight, taking on a slightly milky blue appearance. This optical dimension makes it an exceptional choice for creating unique jewelry pieces. Geologically, this is real amber, not copal, and is estimated to be approximately 23 million years old. The material’s transparency varies with thickness; thinner pieces remain highly translucent, while thicker specimens tend to be more opaque. Because amber is naturally light weight, a 1 lb bag contains a high volume of individual pieces. These raw amber pieces are provided as a random assortment with sizes ranging from 1/4" to 1 1/4" long. The average size of the pieces is 3/4" to 1". This size range is ideal for cabbing, tumbling, and various lapidary applications.
